Day 16

26 April 2011
We had our best day's run of the trip yesterday - 175 miles. For the past few days, even though we have had good boat speed, our distance over ground has been down due to a 1 knot current. That's 24 extra miles to sail every day, but today we finally are rid of it! It's been a wet and wild ride today. Colin got the prize for the biggest wave - he took a green one right over the boat, finding new places for water to go where water has never been before. Both the multihulls in our fleet reported sail repairs required - Cayleid has some flailing sun-protector strip on his Genoa, and, much more seriously, Wachagonnado tore the headboard out of his main. Our whole group is now south of the equator, other than Zephyr, who is handicapped by loss of his roller furler on the second day when it jammed (rolled up, thank goodness). Just before sunset there was a very noisy strike on the fishing line and the lure went to a very large fish. We have not been doing at all well in the fishing. The fresh food is down to a single cabbage, a couple of potatoes and onions, a few oranges and some apples now. Not fancy fare but good enough to prevent the scurvy, Aargh!
