Bastile Day
16 July 2011
Huahine is off the tourist radar and with less than 5000 people still feels like a small island. When we arrived we anchored off the main village, and the firemen were hosing off the (only) street in preparation for Bastile Day. This is the biggest holiday of the year, with parades and parties. The supermarket looked like Costco at Christmas. A group of dancers from Wallis put on a lovely show in the street after the parade, right in front of the supermarket with shoppers coming and going. After the show the girls grabbed spectators to dance with and Rob was a popular choice. The evening features dance competitions for the Heiva Festival - lots of colorful costumes and energetic moves, with the whole community participating, right down to the tiny tots!
