Minerva Reef
09 November 2011
At low tide, we tied the dingy to the coral sidewalk that forms the edge of an infinity pool into the lagoon. We walked the reef that is the only barrier between us and the 1000-meter deep ocean. Turquoise water gave way to purple and orange tide pools, fish darting about between the hidden treasures of cowrie shells. A chunk of keel, the last remnant of some misfortune, provided a treasure of copper nails. The NZ Orion circled overhead, no doubt tagging the 10 boats anchored here for future reference. A curious shark squirmed up into the shallows to investigate our splashing as we waded along the edge. He reappeared only briefly when we snorkeled our way back to the boat.
