The sun is trying to rise behind a veil of wispy cloud. We are approaching the Whangarei Harbour Channel, with its wide stretch of white sand on the south side (we cannot yet see the refinery) and the dramatic South Pacific landscape of craggy rocks on the north side. The one standing guard at Home Point is locally known as The Old Woman, and from this angle she looks like a humped old lady with a sack of coal on her back. They say 'Beware, the old woman sneezes'. She must have had a cold these last couple of days.
