8-14 Mackinac Island

15 August 2015
Barbara
8-14 Mackinac Island: We woke to dense fog at 6:30am. Thunderstorms were predicted for the afternoon. So we had to make a choice. We could leave early in the fog and miss the afternoon thunderstorms. Or, we could leave after the fog lifted and chance the afternoon thunderstorms. We split the difference. We pulled anchor at 10:30 and headed out. By 10:30 the fog had lifted as far as we could see. We could not, however, see Lake Huron from our anchorage. When we pulled out onto the lake, we could see the fog on the horizon. We put up both sails and kept the motor running. The wind was very light and the lake was very calm. We had about a 15 mile visibility. We motor sailed till about 1:30 when I started hearing thunder. We could see the storm over land a few miles away. Not taking any chances, we lowered the sails and increased the rpms on the engine, we were now doing a whopping 5.5kn. Then it became a race between the storm landing on us or us landing on Mackinac Island. We pulled into the dock just as the first raindrops fell. It turns out that the storm missed us. All we had were a few rain drops. However, trying to outrun rain and thunder and lightning is a little nerve wracking. We had dinner, then walked up to Fort Mackinac and did some sightseeing. The pic today is us approaching Mackinac Island, with the storm in the background.
