Hello from Garry's Anchorage (Fraser Island)
07 August 2013
Garry's Anchorage is a chanel formed between Fraser island and Stewart Island only 14 miles north of Wide Bay Bar, its a place where you either love it or hate it. We love it, it was a place where I caught my very first crab, cooked it and it was enough for one sandwich which we enjoyed we look forward in catching more.
We went ashore for a bit of a bushwalk, saw dingo paw prints on the sand but it was days later that we actually saw a dingo walking along the beach. We were surprised to see warning signs saying that crocodiles might be present in the area but apparently one was sighted a few years ago, so no swimming here !!!
A bit of History
Garry's Anchorage named after Garry Owens - a full-blooded aboriginal tracker from the Butchulla people - the traditional custodians of Fraser Island. His name was possibly taken from the name for Fraser Island His son Isaac Garry Owens was one of the last full-blooded Butchulla. He died at Hervey Bay in 1977 aged 62.
