Great Keppel Island Resort no more!
30 August 2013
Everyone has heard of Great Keppel Island but few know that the resort has been closed for many years. Walking along the beaches and seeing the resort buildings behind the wire fences, swimming pools with rotting water and rubbish and the over grown gardens you cant help thinking what a waste of such a beautiful place.
Locals recall what a great Resort it was until it was leased to Contiki and it was marketed to attract the 18-35 year olds, when it fact its a great family holiday location.
Even so the resort is now closed there is still low cost accommodation which ranges from tents and cabins or even a few private beach house on the water's edge.
Tower Holdings purchased about 80% of the island, after closing the resort they unveiled a $1.15 billion revitalisation plan for the island. This includes a 300-room resort hotel, 300 resort apartments, 1,700 villas, a 560-berth marina and ferry terminal, a championship golf course, yacht club, sporting ovals, childcare facilities, chapel and cultural centre. The plan includes 1,300 acres, in other words they wanted to create another "Hamilton Island".
Since then there has been a lot of opposition from the residents of Central Queensland and also from the Environment Minister, so who knows what will happen , such a beautiful place but so many derelict buildings
