Third voyage on 'Spirit of New Zealand' - Voyage 747 Nov 22 - Dec 2 2017.
Great big high over all of NZ the whole trip. Most unusual. Great weather - but no wind.
Dawn swims much nicer than on last trip! (July)

Volunteer on 'Spirit of New Zealand'
06 June 2017
First time as volunteer 'watch assistant' for the Spirit of Adventure Trust tall ship Spirit of New Zealand on a five day journey, 1 - 6 June 2017, in the Hauraki Gulf from Princes Wharf, Auckland.
We tried to get down the coast to Tauranga for a special event supporting the Trust, but had to turn back after two days of bad weather.
But lots of fun doing exercises in the Hauraki Gulf, with forty Y10 students from 4 schools involved.
Crew very welcoming and keen to get me trained up. Lot to learn though! All kinds of new sails to come to grips with, such as the Royal, the Gallant, the Topsail and the Course, and dozens of new lines to hoist them and 'strike' them!
It's very high once you're up that foremast and along the yards. But the event I was most nervous about was the dawn swim! Well, not so bad as it turned out. Warmer than the South Island.
No time to dawdle ..

discretion is the better part of valour!
A hasty departure from the Chathams. Our trip home took almost the same time as our trip there - 3 and 3/4 days - and we arrived home in good spirits after some good sailing and a bit of motoring on Thursday 18 May, 2017.
