Further Off Shore

The morning was again clear and bright as we left Deer Isle. We cruised past the town of Stonington, a very busy lobstering community on the South end of Deer Isle and moored in the harbor of Isle au Haut, an island recently famous for being the home of author Linda Greenlaw and with about 60 year-round residents. The school has four boys as students and there is an ongoing initiative to attract more young residents to keep the school alive. About 75% of the island is now part of Acadia National Park. We did a lot of walking, visited the two gift shops, general store and the library and then hiked over a small mountain trail which was part of Acadia Park. As noted in the picture the island may have more deer than people.
