Another Beautiful Island

We left Brooklin this morning in an overcast, grey drizzle and traveled the remainder of Eggomoggin Reach to arrive two hours later at a free mooring off Holbrook Island in Brookville, ME, not far from Castine. The mooring, 115 acre island and a 1230 acre wildlife sanctuary on the mainland just opposite the island are maintained by the Maine Dept. of Conservation and were all a gift willed to the state in 1971 with the provision that it be maintained in its natural state. The entirety of both areas is covered by well maintained trails and accessible by docks from the water and in the case of the sanctuary, by several parking lots. The sun came out shortly after we arrived and we spent several hours hiking throughout both areas.
