31 July 2014 | Carver's Harbor, Vinalhaven Island
Rich
We've been back to Providence by car twice in the past two weeks to visit and to do some minor work on our house. Yesterday we cruised (through some thick summer fog) to the town of Carver's Harbor at the southern end of Vinalhaven Island for an overnight visit; our first to this spot. The harbor was filled with moorings at which we saw one sailboat, one other powered pleasure boat and about a hundred or more lobster boats. The town is relatively unspoiled by tourists but does have several restaurants, a very upscale art gallery, a nice library and an excellent museum, the Vinalhaven Historical Society. Vinalhaven was one of the foremost sources of granite in the 18th and early 19th century for supersized structures such as the Brooklyn Bridge and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York (four columns weighing 360 tons each.) The vehicle in the picture was called a gallamander and was hauled by a team of oxen to move large pieces of granite.
