We decided to cruise North on the Penobscot River after leaving Holbrook since (1) we had never done so before, and (2) we could stop at Bucksport and buy the Sunday NY Times. The trip took three hours and turned out to be a great stop. In addition to having a recently developed and lovely waterfront park and ample anchorage, Bucksport is just across the river from Fort Knox, one of the best-preserved fortifications in New England. It was built of massive local granite blocks over a 25 year period in the 1800's and is so well preserved because it has never seen combat. Just past the fort is the Penobscot Narrows Bridge which was completed in 2006 and has an observation platform on top of one of its two towers, at 420' feet the highest of its type in the world. The view and the 50 second elevator ride were spectacular. The 2.6 mile walk from Bucksport to the fort and bridge was invigorating if not quite as spectacular.
