A beautiful clear day for a three hour cruise to Isle au Haut (IAH) , via the western and southern side of Vinalhaven and for mooring in the IAH Thorofare off the town ferry dock. We noted the price of the mooring (paid for by inserting cash in a soda bottle attached to the mooring ball) had gone up by $5 since last September. During our two day stay we had a leisurely five mile hike on the island road south into the Acadia National Park, which covers the Southern portion of the island. We also visited with the proprietor of the gift shop (one of the island's two stores - pictured from the water) to get an update on island happenings. Currently there are only 30 year-round residents and three students in the school. A highlight of our visit was the opportunity to drive her "island" car several miles back to the boat landing after she drove us to see the spectacular house, with a more than spectacular view, that her husband has been building them for the past two years or so. It was a typical island car - no muffler, covered in dust, one somewhat wobbly wheel, etc - quite an experience. We just left it at the dock with the key in it, since, as Kendra said, where could anyone go with it?
