Ever since we got here we have been hearing loud booms periodically during the day. We thought they came from the pirate tour boat. Today we found out it's not the pirates, it's the soldiers! We felt the need to get off the boat and be tourists, so we walked to the bridge, checked out the waterfront, and went on to the fort (Castillo de San Marcos). They were doing a costumed reenactment and fired one of the cannons! (Of course, they don't use a cannonball.) They talk about the cannons and how well they protected the fort, which never lost a battle. They said the cannons could reach as far as the lighthouse! We were told to cover our ears, but it was still really loud. You can see the smoke and debris in the above photo.
