Passage North
25 February 2014 | Little Harbour, Abacos
Beverly/partly cloudy and warm
Today we left Royal Island before dawn and headed out the passage at Little Egg Island. The seas were calm, just the big swells moving in from way out in the Atlantic. The passage to the Abacos is almost straight north through the Atlantic, about 50 miles (plus the 5 miles to and from anchorages). Although we began with no wind, we gradually got enough to put out the sail and were able to motorsail most of the way. We did have some light showers, but most of the day was pleasantly warm. We kept hoping to see whales, as we had heard someone talking about seeing a pod of them a couple of days earlier, but no luck. We did see some flying fish (sometimes in a school/flock) and a few sea birds. There were a few ships crossing our path at times, but they were easily visible and were never a problem. It took us 12 hours from anchor up to anchor down and now we are pretty tired. Time for dinner and bed and tomorrow we'll head for Marsh Harbour.
