Hopetown

Lighthouse and part of the harbor, from our mooring.
On the 11th we motorsailed in light winds from Great Guana Cay to Hopetown, where we took a mooring. We stayed here a few days to explore the town and wait out another cold front. We checked out the bank (no ATM), grocery store, liquor store, ice cream store (Sugar Shack). There are lots of pretty pastel colored houses and shops, set off by colorful flowers. We enjoyed delicious fish tacos and margaritas at Cap'n Jacks. We also visited the Wyannie Malone museum in town and the lighthouse on the other side of the harbor. It's one of the last 3 continuously operated, kerosene fueled, hand-wound rotation lighthouses in the world. It's a relatively easy climb (for a lighthouse) of 101 steps and provides great views of the harbor, the Sea of Abaco, and the Atlantic. We didn't go out on the observation platform because it didn't look safe, but enjoyed our tour.
