Calcasieu River to Mermentau River
07 October 2015 | Mermentau River, LA
Beverly/sunny and warm
Today we only had to travel 39.6 nm, which took about 8 hours. Shortly after leaving the anchorage we arrived at the Calcasieu locks. When we called, the lockmaster told us they were closed until 5 pm for maintenance. Nooo! But then he came back on and said that since we were small we could get past the barge doing the work and he let us through. Whew! Not surprisingly, there was very little barge traffic that day (since they couldn't get through). Along the way we spotted a little green snake swimming across the ICW and several eagles, along with the usual seagulls, egrets, and blue herons. We are anchored in our usual spot on the Mermentau River, one of our favorite stops. We have only seen 1 alligator this time, swimming in the water near the small island in the oxbow.
