A New (To Us) Anchorage
09 October 2015 | Charenton Drainage Canal, LA
Beverly/sunny and warm
We don't like staying at the dock in Morgan City because it's very rough and exposed to wakes and current. So we did our research and came up with the Charenton Drainage Canal. It was a short 35 nm from Shell Morgan and looked pretty good. (We did have an alternative picked out just in case.) 7 hours of motoring got us there fairly early in the afternoon, with time to pick out our spot. It's a man-made canal and deep until you get close to the edge. We found a spot away from crab traps and far enough out of the channel to allow for traffic. We saw some boat traffic, mostly small boats and a couple of light boats (tows with no barge). Then the water hyacinths began to drift in. They came by in patches, some with pretty purple flowers and a couple of big ones with resident ducks. Then they decided to assimilate us (see photo above). Fortunately, they were gone by morning and we were free to leave. There were also a lot of mosquitos beating on our screens (and getting in when one of us needed to go out. We have lots of bites and lots of bloody spots where we smashed them. Still, it was a pretty good anchorage.
