About: In 2009 we both turned 50 years of age and embarked on our dream of sailing the Mediterranean. We worked our way from Skiathos, Greece and after a few adventures settled in Marmaris, Turkey before moving to a new marina in Cyprus.
Extra: Our original plans to sail to Spain have changed for numerous reasons and despite having had some wonderful adventures and met some great people we're now going to have to sell our boat and with a bit of luck continue our journeys by road, but thats a good few months away yet

End of an Era

Sadly life has changed forever, Cathie finally lost her fight against cancer on Christmas Day 2012. She'd fought hard but just couldn't beat it this time. To say she will be sadly missed is a massive understatement, the church was packed to the rafters for her funeral so thanks to everyone for their [...]

Quick Visa Run Goes Wrong

We flew back to the UK at the begining of April as our 90 day Turkish visas needed renewing, and crazily it was cheaper jumping on an EasyJet flight to the UK, than getting the ferry over to Rhodes.

Cappadocia

Regular mini bus tours of Turkey are organised locally in Marmaris and we've taken full advantage of this. The latest trip involved a round trip of around 1500 kilometers to the ancient region in cetral Turkey known as Cappadocia. This is a truely facinating place which has been occupied by man for thousands [...]

Istanbul Boat Show

We managed to escape some of the cold weather in the UK by flying back to Turkey on the 3rd January 2011. Fortunately it was a direct flight from Manchester to Dalaman but the pilot had to abort the landing due to a thunder storm and we spent two hours on the tarmac in Rhodes before successfully getting [...]

End of Another Season

Unfortunately our immediate sailing was cut short when we had to fly back to the UK for the funeral of a close friends daughter. Rachie was only young (24 years old), suffered from diabetes and will be sadly missed, but always fondly remembered. A poem that she wrote for us has pride of place on Bruadar: When [...]

Skopea Limani to Marmaris

05 October 2009
Warm but Changeable
We refuelled before leaving Gocek in the late afternoon to peals of thunder and lightening, which fortunately stayed over the hills around the town. We anchored in Tomb Bay with a line ashore. The next day we explored the tombs again, before going out into the bay for a sail, returning to Valley Bay the next night. This formed the pattern for the next few days reading, swimming, snorkelling and sailing.
One day we ventured across Fethiye Bay stopping the night on a mooring bouy at Karac Aoren Restaurant. The meal was lovely, and the people were really friendly and helpful. The only off putting things were a cockrell that never shut up and a three legged cat that still had about two inches of bone protruding from its stump, which clunked everytime it moved around on the decking, right by the table that we ate at.
We bimbled around the coast including Cold Water Bay, before finally heading back over to Skopea Limani.
By now the weather had started to take on a far more Autumnal feel to it, although it was still hotter than the best summer days back in the UK. We'd also heard that there was some more bad weather forecast, so we knew that it was getting close to the time when we should start to head back to Marmaris and think about getting things ready to winterize the boat, as it was booked to be lifted out of the water on 20th October, so we headed for Ecincek.
We anchored off the beach swinging free and went ashore eating in one of the local restaurants. The owner "Cef" invited us to come and stay with him through the winter dragging his thumb across his throat in sign language to signify having some of his home grown lamb. The meal and company was good, although a swell built up through the night making it uncomfortable.
The wind was also building, so we guessed that this was probably the bad weather that had been predicted, so we moved mid morning to a more sheltered position across the bay. We were soon joined by some gullets and fishing boats which we took as a good sign, despite the worsening weather.
It was another spectacular light show with intermittent bursts of rain, but the next day the swell had eased, so we set out first thing to head back to Marmaris arriving back at Cow Beach, Pupa Yacht by 10.30 am. The only unusual event being a submarine which crossed our stern as we passed the entrance to the naval base.
