Vessel Make/Model: Beneteau Oceanis 373
Hailing Port: Liverpool
Crew: Mike & Cathie Hall
About: In 2009 we both turned 50 years of age and embarked on our dream of sailing the Mediterranean. We worked our way from Skiathos, Greece and after a few adventures settled in Marmaris, Turkey before moving to a new marina in Cyprus.
Extra: Our original plans to sail to Spain have changed for numerous reasons and despite having had some wonderful adventures and met some great people we're now going to have to sell our boat and with a bit of luck continue our journeys by road, but thats a good few months away yet

End of an Era

Sadly life has changed forever, Cathie finally lost her fight against cancer on Christmas Day 2012. She'd fought hard but just couldn't beat it this time. To say she will be sadly missed is a massive understatement, the church was packed to the rafters for her funeral so thanks to everyone for their [...]

Quick Visa Run Goes Wrong

We flew back to the UK at the begining of April as our 90 day Turkish visas needed renewing, and crazily it was cheaper jumping on an EasyJet flight to the UK, than getting the ferry over to Rhodes.

Cappadocia

Regular mini bus tours of Turkey are organised locally in Marmaris and we've taken full advantage of this. The latest trip involved a round trip of around 1500 kilometers to the ancient region in cetral Turkey known as Cappadocia. This is a truely facinating place which has been occupied by man for thousands [...]

Istanbul Boat Show

We managed to escape some of the cold weather in the UK by flying back to Turkey on the 3rd January 2011. Fortunately it was a direct flight from Manchester to Dalaman but the pilot had to abort the landing due to a thunder storm and we spent two hours on the tarmac in Rhodes before successfully getting [...]

End of Another Season

Unfortunately our immediate sailing was cut short when we had to fly back to the UK for the funeral of a close friends daughter. Rachie was only young (24 years old), suffered from diabetes and will be sadly missed, but always fondly remembered. A poem that she wrote for us has pride of place on Bruadar: When [...]

Turkish Holiday (Turkocamp)

27 August 2010 | Skopea Limani
Hot Hot Hot!!!!!!!
We spoke too soon about the temperature peaking, it continued climbing until it peaked at 50 degrees in Fethiye just around the corner from where we were and the humidity rose with it!
So we decided that it was time to make our way back to Skopea Limani and fortunately we picked a good day with a favourable wind some cloud and even a couple of spots of rain.
Once we arrived we then spent a couple of weeks in different anchorages and mooring buoys, nipping into Gocek about once a week for provisions and sailing in Fethiye bay when it got too hot.
We even saw a porcupine one evening in one of the more isolated coves and managed to pick up one of its dropped quills the next day!
August is obviously one of the main holiday breaks for the local Turkish people and we witnessed what appeared to be their equivalent to Eurocamp Turkish style. We'd anchored in a place called Round bay and watched as families arrived at the beach in all modes of transport from mopeds, flat back wagons and even a tractor and trailer. They then erected shelters and sparked up BBQ's. The facilities were very basic a hand operated water standpipe lined up along the beach every 50 metres or so. The photo doesn't do it justice but it kept us amused.
We're off to Gocek now to moor up on the town quay whilst we wait for Bob & Linda's flight to arrive. They're with us for a week to sample some of the delights of cruising the Med, as opposed to sailing their boat on the Mersey. Which I'm sure that they'll find interesting and it'll be good to cath up on the gossip etc.
