Passage to FL
17 April 2018
The Captain had studied his weather window correctly: we had a perfect 36 hours allowing us to motor sail out the Sea of Abacos making 6 knots, bid the Bahamas farewell, and head out into the Gulf, riding a 5+ knot current north. The sky was spectacular the first night, allowing DPH to sleep under the stars in the cockpit, and each of us getting several good hours of sleep. The next day, the Gulf/weather was favorable enough to allow us up on the foredeck, and to our amazement and the Captain’s excitement, see and FEEL the Space-Ex rocket launch off Cape Canaveral, at 6:30 PM the next day. AMAZING show from start to finish (talking to Port Authorities/Coast Guard to make sure we were out of the safety zone- which DPH plotted), seeing vividly the contrail of both rocket and booster, the FEELING/hearing the sonic BOOM 5 minutes later, all at a 50+ mile distance. WOW!
