Don & Deb's Big Adventure Continues in Oz

Day 29 & 30 to the Marquesas

19 April 2012 | Outbound Cabo, Inbound Marquesas, French Polynesia
Day 29 & 30 = 152 nautical miles. 189 miles to go! After days and even weeks in the doldrums dodging squalls and praying for wind we've finally gotten far enough south to see easterly winds. Only 10 knots but that's more than enough to keep Buena Vista moving along at a nice clip. There's still towering cumulus clouds that turn into nasty rain squalls all over the place. It's a bit like cat and mouse out here but we're getting a little better at dodging them. Our friends Mike and Karen and their son Falcon on sailboat 'Beau Soleil' have almost caught up to us so it's nice to have someone to talk to on the radio. We've decided rather than going to the main town on Nuka Hiva and 'checking in' like we're supposed to, we're going to Anaho Bay first for a few days to chill out after this long voyage. Beau Soleil is doing the same thing. Anaho Bay is on the north side of Nuka Hiva and it is supposed to be one of the prettiest places in the entire Marquesas Group. It has a nice coral reef for snorkeling, lots of great hiking trails, a beach with big breaking waves, and a little village. The bay cuts deep enough into the island that the swell doesn't reach all the way in ...so it will be very flat - which is something I really am looking forward to. Imagine eating a nice dinner in the cockpit, at the table and not having to chase your food around. Imagine a night's sleep without constant rolling from side to side. Imagine...I could go on forever about the things I am looking forward to. But most of all I 'm looking forward to the feeling I'll have when we finally get to drop the hook and look at each other and say "Oh My God, we really it did it - we sailed to the South Pacific".

Last great adventure was traveling around Australia for 12 months in a VW van in 1992, and getting married in New Zealand on the way back to the States. After two years cruising in Mexico, in 2012 we sailed across the South Pacific stopping at many island nations including French Polynesia, the [...]
