Nice Overnighter
09 August 2014 | Savu Savu, Fiji
The overcast and rainy weather was looking to continue for awhile so we decided to bug out of Vanua Balavu and head back west. We motored out through the break in the reef from Little Bay and turned left. Now we're inside the big reef and have to follow our previous tracks around the many surface reefs to get out to open ocean once again. It's a bit stressful since it's overcast and hard to see anything in the water. As we passed by Bavatu Harbor we saw several huge superyachts anchored inside. Looks like they're having a meeting of the minds in there. It's raining now and we decide to press on. About an hour later we are heading out the big pass and feel a great deal of relief to be safe again from reefs. Setting sail we get the hydrovane set up and away we go westward. If we want to stop at Taveuni Island we're get there about 1am. We're thinking we'll just go all the way to Savu Savu and arrive first thing in the morning. We catch a beautiful mahi on the way. Curly's lures are certainly working for us! Winds were SE about 15 the whole night. It was a bit bumpy but you can do almost anything for 24 hours. The sun went down and the moon rose directly behind us. Through the night the moon traveled directly overhead and in the very early hours it set along the horizon directly in front of us. Not sure that has happened before. As planned, we made it to Savu Savu and are ready for a break.
