Home Again, Home Again

Motored into home marina June 3 at about 6pm. Our last day had its own challenges. We left Taylor Bayou and were surrounded with a large downfall of rain which restricted our vision. About 10 minutes into this down pour a large tow behind us wanted to pass us. Well, we agreed to turn our boat around [...]

02 June 2016 | Taylor Bayou Outfall

Almost Home

We are anchored at Taylor Bayou outfall again. We spent 3 days here waiting for bad weather to subside at the start of this adventure. We were at Pavel Island near Orange last night and it was a quiet anchorage and no obvious signs of flooding. Pavel Island is just off the Sabine river. We pulled [...]

26 May 2016 | Houma

Houma Louisiana

We are along side the bulkhead of the transient berths at Houma. Very nice folks. We came in with an efficient "to do" list. 1. refill 5 gallon containers (3) , 2. Pump out black tanks, 3. refill water tank, 4. check battery water, check engine strainer due to lots of water hyacinth. The Houma area [...]

On May 22 we made it from Dauphin Island through a big part of Mississippi sound to Cat Island. A weak cold front was due in early in the evening but the forecast was for very light winds. So we anchored on the north side of the island that was in the shape of L laying down. We tried to anchor close [...]

Chilling at Pensacola

08 May 2016
We dropped our niece Stacey at the airport for her trip back to Houston today. It was a wonderful three day visit. We left the marina on Thursday after a cold front had entered the area. A north wind pushed us to Santa Rosa National Park. We launched the dingy and motored to the park easily. We spent a couple hours on the beach and when we started to go back to Abundance, the waves on the bay were 1-2 feet. Stacey and I walked the dingy to nearly waist deep water and I quickly jumped in the dingy and started the motor before we were pushed back to shore. Marsha and Stacey had collected at the bow and their combined weight was causing waves to lap into the dingy and a level of several inches of water had collected in the dingy before I asked them to scoot back from the bow. We reduced the amount of water we were taking on but Stacey asked “how much water could the dingy carry?”. We made to abundance and Stacey and Marsha boarded the sailboat. I was given a cup to bail the boat with. It took a while to nearly empty the dingy of water. With the dingy on the foredeck, we headed over to English Navy cove which protected us from a northerly wind. Unfortunately, we were near a boat ramp and those boaters were not considerate of sailboats at anchor and from 5:30am on we were rocked with various wakes.
Friday we sailed offshore near Santa Rosa beach. The brilliant colors were gone. There was a drab deep greenblue to the gulf waters. We sailed several miles down the beach and came back to the inlet to Pensacola. The current was ripping out the pass and we were making 1-2 knots when we would normally be making 6 knots. While slogging our way up the inlet we saw dolphins and sting ray jumped out of the water near us. We finally made it to the bay of Pensacola and headed for English Navy Cove due to more north winds.
Our third day was a return to Santa Rosa Island where we used the dingy to get to shore and we walked to the gulf side to rediscover the wonder colors of sea, sand and sky. We spent several hours there and when it was time to return to Abundance, the north wind had laid down and a Southeasterly wind was starting. Securing the dingy was a breeze and we headed back to Marinemax marina. The sail back was very brisk and sails had to be reduced to keep the boat from heeling. We finished the visit with a tourist visit to Joe Patties and Shoreline Greek foods. It was a wonderful visit and we really enjoyed her company. After dropping Stacey of we went back to St. Michael’s Basilica for Sunday Mass and Marsha got a Mother’s day rose.
