The last time I was able to post was the day we left Port Arthur. Turns out my satellite email is messed up and I could not make any alternatives work. We did make it in one piece with little to no drama, except for the very cold first couple of nights, like in the low 40s.
The race in reverse. Not actually, though at times fighting the 4 kt. East Australia current which flows south down the coast, made it feel like we were going backwards. Though we sailed (I should say motor sailed) a much straighter course, we added over 100 miles on the passage back than we did in the race. The extra 100 miles is partially a result of the current, and having very little wind coming directly towards us did not help. Besides those things we were doing our best to conserve fuel, running at slightly lower than normal RPMs we also move slower.
Having said that, it was a blessed relief to not hear any news for five days. When we did arrive, we looked at all the news stories we could find. It is not a pretty picture anywhere you look. Virtually all the Pacific islands have closed their borders to non-citizens, though we are OK in Australia at least until our Visas expire. We expect if the world is still locked down when that time comes, the Australian Government will allow us to extend our stay.
We are only going to stay in Sydney for a week or so, then we will head north as winter is fast approaching and we want to be like snow birds, getting some place warm to hunker down…literally and More later
