The Conch Man!

09 January 2014 | Bimini
Yesterday, as 30+ knots of wind blew the rain of a front across the decks, we stayed on board. We took care of a few small boat projects then read our books. Oh ya, we made a conch salad for lunch! Were did we get the conch?

Monday night brought the beginning of the front. The sea & surf built into an angry mess after a night of 40 knot squalls. Yes, it's been a couple of very blowy days here!

During a break in the weather, the day before, we took an afternoon stroll to look at the surf. The waves coming onto the beach where about 8' high and washing up onto the upper reaches of the sand dunes. What a sight!

On our way back to CALYPSO we were stopped by one of the local dock hands we see and speak with often. He asked if we like conch. We looked at each other and shook our heads-yes!

With the bad weather he was out of work for the day. No work, no get paid mon.

He had been harvesting conch in a small protected lagoon nearby to help make up for his lost income.

We got a dozen fresh, shelled, cleaned, and bruised (beaten) conch for $15. He even threw in a few of his recipes and cooking tips for free.

So, tuesday night we had cracked (fried) conch. Wednesday we had conch salad for lunch and conch pizza for dinner. Finally, for lunch this afternoon we had sautéed conch sandwiches. That finishes all 12, but we are not conched out;)

The unexpected pleasures of Bimini are around every corner!
