The Georgetown Shuffle
18 February 2014 | At Anchor-Red Shanks Area
Despite the distance to town by dinghy we decided to stay in Red Shanks.
After the last big front passed through the boat count here went from 30+ to six. However, in the major anchorages nearby it has grown to over 300! So if the price we pay for solitude is an occasional long dinghy ride, it's worth it to us.
Today, for the second day in a row, winds top out at 25 knots from the east. Also, there are at least two more days like this in the forecast.
The more popular anchorages offer cruisers good wind protection but mostly from only one direction. As the wind builds a fetch develops in the long harbor and a roll starts. This can become uncomfortable at best.
We are seeing a steady stream of cruisers picking up and heading for the 360 degree protection of Red Shanks. We are pretty sure that they will leave once the strong winds subside sometime this weekend.
This parade of boats is called the Georgetown Shuffle.
