Lump in throat
01 October 2010 | Washington, D.C.
Sunny, breezy from the NW
After the deluge yesterday, a wonderful dry day. Got out the bike and did the circuit of the memorials: Jefferson, Roosevelt, Lincoln, Vietnam, WW II and the Washington monument.
What struck me was the mix of all races, ages, and nationalities. Rarely in this modern American culture does one experience a large group being mostly silent and respectful, reverential almost.
And Arlington. The lone soldier pacing 21 steps in front of the Tomb of the Unknown, pausing 21 seconds and then 21 steps back. While a crowd of several hundred watched in silence. Goosebumps.
