Just exactly how did they do that?
12 October 2010 | Yorktown battlefield
Sunny, almost hot
Visited the site of the last major battle of the Revolutionary War. The logistics were stunning.
They managed to get messages transmitted by courier over hundreds of miles.
Washington marched 10, 000 men from New York to Yorktown in the mid August heat in a couple weeks. That's 450 miles! With all their cannons and supplies.
A fleet of ships sailed south from Newport in the space of a week. To windward in a square riggers.
They dug a siege trench 4 feet deep and half a mile long overnight with hand tools. That's a lot of shovels and motivation.
Cruising note: There are moorings over at the Riverfront Landing. $25. Quite a distance from the dock. Is almost as easy to dinghy over from Sarah Creek if the weather is fair
