The piney woods
16 October 2010 | Scranton Creek, Pungo River
Sunny,
After the "big city" of Elizabeth City tied to the free dock, we are deep in the piney woods in a small creek off the Pungo River. It is blessedly silent. Sixty nine miles today.
Calypso pulled on her seven league boots and took some giant strides across the Albemarle Sound and down the Alligator River. 8 to 9 knots boat speed for five plus hours with 20 to 25 knots of NW wind on our quarter. Got through the Alligator River bridge just before the bridge tender decided it was too breezy to open. Phew!
We were hoping to sail down the Alligator Pungo Canal but it veers just a bit too much west to pull that off. Either it was the wind or the weekend but we didn't encounter a single tug/barge or even a power boat all day. Just a couple of sailboats out there behind us.
