Enough to make one a vegan
02 March 2011 | Exuma Sound
Exuma Sound is cerulean blue and smooth as glass as we dash south to Georgetown before it begins to blow 20 from the East for the next three or four days.
Bzzzzzzzzzzz goes the reel as the line pays out. Fish on! After a momentary struggle, I reel it in. 30 yards out I see the iridescent flash of a mahi mahi. But it is not fighting. Then next to it, another flash, and another and another. We counted a dozen mahi swimming beside their hooked sister, she appearing to be comforted by their presence. When the last few feet of line were in and the school veered away from the boat, she made a few prodigious leaps before I flopped her into the trailing dinghy. We stared at our catch as the color ebbed away.
To our utter amazement, the school came back and made several passes under the dinghy. We will honor this fish as we eat her tonight.
