Crack crew

What a hoot! Calypso's first race. Bill and Cathy, our new friends Shara and David from Aura III, King Kut, the Admiral and the dawg were cranking away on the winches. A couple laps around the harbor with 20 other boats. Perfect conditions for us: wind 18-25 knots out of the East in the flat calm harbor. We could lay the upwind mark on one tack and it took us through the outer edge of the anchored fleet. As we went by within spitting distance, the anchored boat crews were out taking photos and video and cheering us on. We should end up with some great stuff for Calypso's archives. When we eased sheets on the downwind legs, we fairly scampered along at eight plus knots, powering by the competition who only had two sails. And who said ketches aren't fast! To add a little excitement to the second lap, we managed to stir up a bit o' sand over the shallow spots in Elizabeth Harbor. In other words, if we hadn't been heeled over at 30 degrees, the race course and falling tide would have put us hard aground. We don't know yet what the rankings are on corrected time but rumor has it Calypso acquitted herself respectably. And Mango and the baking assistants served hot oatmeal raisin cookies during the race for the crew!
Bill and Cathy had to leave this afternoon, but that was a great capstone to a wonderful week with them!
