Escapees
13 April 2011 | Peck Lake
After a great visit with long lost cousin Harvey this morning, we pointed Calypso north out of Lake Worth. It was blowing NE and with more predicted tomorrow, so we figured we just needed to suck it up and do the half dozen bridges on the ICW. Given it was a Wednesday afternoon we had the house gawking more or less to ourselves.
North Palm Beach on the ICW is a parade of excess and bad taste. 5,000 -10,000 sq ft homes built cheek by jowl on quarter acre lots. Fortunately it is a short parade. After the Jupiter Inlet, the ICW widens and becomes Hobe Sound. The elegant older homes here luxuriate in two acre plus lots with large lawns easing down to the water. Pools, privacy, beautiful landscaping with huge palms swaying gently in the breeze, calm prevails.
We ended at so called Peck Lake, a wide spot on the trail. A popular stopping place as it gives the impression of being much farther away than south Florida. Ospreys and egrets and lush mangroves. A 100 yd trail leads across the barrier island to a deserted oceanside beach. The ambiance is spoiled just a bit by the tower with a swiveling video camera. No doubt big brother looking for Meg trying to sneak ashore! (They didn’t catch her…..)
