Ode to a Bridge
19 April 2011 | St. Augustine
The good people of St. Augustine elected to keep their Bridge of Lions, arguably the most scenic of all the ICW bridges. They rebuilt it in the last few years as the original beautiful opening bridge, probably at much greater expense, and certainly inconvenience, than a new "modern" 65 foot high fixed bridge. (They had to build a complete temporary bridge beside it during the reconstruction! If you click on "Current Position" to the right and zoom in, you will see the old Google Earth photo of the reconstruction.)
Virtually all other ICW communities, when given this choice, have opted for the fixed version. We cruisers applaud their celebration of history and good taste.
