Of Bugs and Sand

If I were to whine about something very small it might be no see ums. How can a creature so tiny bite with such vigor? When it is cool, no big deal, cover up. When it is hot, and you are sailing through lots of marshes at low tide, no fun. Unlike mosquitoes you usually don’t see them until they have bitten you! God help you if they are swarming.
So far it has been tolerable. Not roasting hot and enough wind to blow them away. At night when the wind dies, they don’t seem to get past our screens but it is ten degrees warmer below from the engine radiated heat. I definitely have my eye on the relief from the next cold front.
That was a very pleasant surprise about the Bahamas. Maybe we had one or two nights when we thought about bugs. But essentially it never occurred to us to prepare with screens as the sun went down.
On the other hand, the sand is so fine in the Bahamas, it gets everywhere. (Turns out it got inside our new waterproof camera which they agreeably fixed under warranty.) And of course Meg brought her share aboard, no matter how well I tried to brush her off. Like my aversion to biting bugs, I am not a big fan of sand. But I made my peace with the beautiful sand of the Bahamas. A little bit everywhere was a small price to pay.
