Getting ready for the long holiday weekend?
01 July 2011 | Great Kills Harbor, Staten Island
N 10 - S 10
As we were finishing our 12 hour motor up the Jersey shore, we rounded Sandy Hook and crossed Raritan Bay in a flat calm and were waved down by four men in a little runabout. They were shooting off flares. We stopped to assist. It won't start, they say. Two of them are talking on cell phones. Who are you talking to, I inquired. NYPD, they respond. Ok this is a little unusual but we hang with them for a few minutes, writing down the lat/lon to give to the authorities. Do you have towing insurance? No.
Moments later we are being circled by a NYPD helicopter. And a couple miles away a NYPD boat is speeding to the scene, and then another. And then a NYFD boat. And they took them under tow to Atlantic Highlands.
Sigh. Perhaps they needed a little practice. I guess NYC is flush with homeland security dough.
Befitting our arrival at Great Kills Harbor, we were treated to a lovely Dutch seascape sky. Son Andrew arrives tonight for a weekend with the 'rents.
