Offshore
30 January 2015
It's 5:45 a.m. and the coffee is on. We have a quick bowl of cereal and listen to the marine forecast. Carl checks the wind predictions and we secure everything for an offshore passage to Ft. Lauderdale. The anchor is up by 6:45 and we are on our way. Lake Worth is a large anchorage where many cruisers sit to wait for a weather window to cross over to the Bahamas.. There must be at least 30 boats in this area south of Peanut Island. Dan left at 5:30 a.m., heading for the Bahamas. This morning, by the time we leave there are only a dozen boats or so left. Before we are out of the anchorage the Ray marine chart plotter stops working. We have the Garmin on the ipad as backup. Carl turns it off for now. He'll have to look at it later. Winds are N.W. 5-10, seas 2-4ft. with 9 second intervals, expected to build and then die off later this afternoon. The Lake Worth inlet is choppy. Once we are through and out in the ocean, Carl turns the chart plotter back on and it works again. Saw a few dolphin and some divers down at a reef along the coast of Boca Raton. A lovely day sail. We reached the Hillsboro inlet about 2:15 and were at the 17th street bridge for the2:30 opening. We anchored in Lake Sylvia at 3:30. It's beautiful, warm and sunny! So glad to finally be out of the cold. While I was cooking dinner, Fred on Casa Mare anchored beside us. He decided to head farther south before crossing to the Bahamas. Don on Lydia Grace went offshore at Lake Worth, but decided it was too rough and came back in. He's waiting for another window at Riviera Beach marina. We are planning another offshore day trip to Miami tomorrow. Well, the food is not always blog worthy. Just hotdogs for dinner tonight! But, we are eating on a yacht in the backyard of multimillion dollar homes and enjoying the sunset. Not too shabby!
