Cape Charles part 2

24 October 2018
Wednesday October 24
We bounced around all night as the winds were gusting steadily at 25-30 kts. S/V Monarch left around 7 a.m. when we got up to make some line and fender adjustments and have our coffee. Carl decided that it would be good to get off the boat and go into town for breakfast. The wind is making it feel colder than the 48* that it is. We bundled up and put on our hoods and hats and walked several blocks to Rayfield’s Pharmacy for breakfast. They have an old fashioned soda fountain and booths were they serve breakfast and lunch. We all had big breakfasts with sausage and eggs. I had sweet potato pancakes that reminded me of my Grandmother’s sweet potato biscuits. With our bellies full, we decided to get some more exercise and walk a few more blocks to the museum and welcome center. The museum has a variety of displays about Cape Charles and it’s place in the history of railroads, rail car floats, steamships, ferries and workboats. Carl remembers taking the “Steamer Cape Charles” with his Grandmother to visit friends when he was a young boy. There was a model of a Bugeye sailing vessel similar to the Bugeye schooner that Carl once owned. We walked through some of the residential streets and back to the Main Street shops where Judy and I stopped to do a little browsing. In the afternoon, Judy and I set out to see some more sights. We stopped first at the library that was in an old bank building with beautiful columns and chandeliers. We visited the town fishing pier. We braved the winds to walk out over the dunes to the beach for a picture. We admired the huge old homes as we walked up Bay Avenue and there we spotted King Neptune. After Carl and I had a salad for dinner on the boat, we joined Don and Judy on Nemo for a game of Dominoes and to plan the next leg of our trip.
