A Wet Ride and A Wild Ride
08 November 2018
There were just a few fly overs after dinner last night and then it was quiet. We are getting an early start this morning in order to time the shallow areas with the high tide. We left our anchorage at Mile Hammock at 7:30 a.m. It was cloudy. We spent the day trying to time the bridges. Surf City on the hour, Figure Eight on the hour and half hour and Wrightsville on the hour. It seems that no matter how we try, we end up waiting or going slow to keep from waiting at one end or the other. The Surf City swing bridge is being replaced by a 65’ fixed bridge. That will help, when it is completed next fall. We would all love to go offshore instead of dealing with the bridges but the weather has not cooperated. So we keep poking along inside on the ICW. We saw a few dolphin along the way. We arrived at our anchorage at Wrightsville Beach at 2:30p.m. Don dropped the anchor and we rafted up again. Then Carl puts the dinghy in and we all pile in and head for shore. On the way in Carl spotted S/V Wayward Sun. We spent some time together with Tim and Michele several years ago in Portsmouth and then we saw them in Vero Beach another time. We tied up to the dinghy dock and there was Tim. He is taking their boat to Florida by himself. Michele will join him later. We invited him to join us for a walk and a bite to eat. We ended up at King Neptune’s. The special of the day was chicken and waffles. Delicious! After we ate, we all walked across the street to see the beach. It started to sprinkle as we made our way back to the dock. We said “goodbye “ to Tim and we motored back to our boat as the rain came down harder. Then it really poured. It was a wet ride!
There were storms overnight. We were up early. We untied our boat and Don weighed anchor at 8:15 a.m. Taking advantage of the high tide again, it will be a short day. The rivers were high and the current was running fast. In the Cape Fear River we encountered a container ship in a narrow channel. “Yeehaw” it was a wild ride as we cut through his huge wake. It was cloudy and colder. We were on the dock at South Harbour Village marina at noon. We took advantage of the time we had here and took showers and did laundry. One of our favorite restaurants is here. So, we went to dinner at Joseph’s Italian Bistro. The food was good and the company even better! It was a great evening.
