Today we crossed the Mississippi River T St Louis and traveled a short distance to Camp Dubois in Illinois. This is where Lewis and Clark and their team arrived in December 1804 and made ready for their epic trip up the Missouri River. Clark had come down the Ohio River earlier where he had a large "keelboat" made. They winter camped here until May 1805.
The center has a movie, display area and a mock up of the buildings they built for the wintering. There is even a mock up of the keelboat. It is really quite large. It is hard to imagine rowing and poling and pulling this huge craft up River. They listed all the supplies they took. They included food, amunition, trade goods, household goods etc, etc. Men were above and underneath was storage. Several tons.
In 1804 it was on the Wood River cheer it met the Mississippi. The Mississippi has now moved, so we did not see the Wood River.
There was even a person spinning at a spinning wheel. So interesting to watch her as she spun.
