Seú Parade
28 March 2016
In Curacao, the last process of the harvest season is celebrated since 1976 and knows two forms: ‘Seú sintá’ (seated Seú) is when the celebration is in one place and participants sing, play the instruments and dance till midnight. The other form is called ‘Fila di Seú’ (Seú parade), during which the participants form a long procession and wear colorful cultural clothing. They use many different instruments like tambú, heru, kachu and brasa. They clap their hands and sing humorous or protest songs about everyday life. People in Curacao recognize the soul of this celebration: a lifetime of memories about the hard times they had and thankfulness for the results of hard work. Dancing to the rhythms of the instruments, the people in the parade dance a specific dance called ‘wapa’. Wapa is dancing from one place to another, moving forward, turning around and moving forward edgewise with the hip.
