Sint Maarten
21 January 2012 | Simpson Bay, St. Maartin
Dennis / Sorry, but gotta say it ... another great day in paradise!
We arrived at St. Maartin (Dutch side) yesterday mid afternoon, checked-in, checked a few things out by dinghy and watched a beautiful sunset from Simpson Bay, just outside the Lagoon. We decided not to rush into the lagoon at the 5:30 PM bridge opening but wait until 9:30 today. The bridge into the lagoon opens three times a day inbound, the first at 9:30. So, we got ready and were first in line - leading the parade. It was a little hairy, as we were going like half a knot, timing the bridge opening as best we could, but the wind was gusting and pushing us off course in tight quarters. We had to goose it a bit to realign, then slow down again so as not to get to the bridge too soon ... or too late (the local police boat kept telling us to keep moving forward). It was quite the thrill! (See pic below.) Then, after a few errands today, all of a sudden all the mega yachts starting blowing their horns. Believe me, that was quite the riotous event, and we had no idea what was happening. Then it clicked ... we'd seen a sign welcoming Laura Dekker, the Kiwi/German/Dutch girl who sailed solo around the world (but not non-stop). She arrived today at 3:00 from Cape Town (that part was non-stop!). It was mayhem in the harbor! We tried to get too close, and a police boat "subtly" pushed us back into our place.
