Tagua Art for Valentine’s Day
17 January 2014 | Green Island, Guna Yala
This morning is lovely in Green Island, Guna Yala, Panama. Today we have a French cruiser aboard named Catherine. She makes lovely jewelry from the seeds of the "tagua" a type of palm tree from the Panamanian rainforest. She also uses hand-collected forest vegetable dyes from Peru.
As soon as I saw her interesting handmade pieces I called my friend Eileen on the radio. Eileen and Mark are sailing buddies who are currently anchored next to us. Eileen quickly rowed over to Centime to share in the fun. When Eileen arrived, Catherine told us the story of the tagua and how she and her partner make the jewelry. We enjoyed looking through her pieces and trying on several. We both purchased a couple - wonderful Valentine's Day presents. It felt like a cruiser's Tupperware party to me and it was quite fun! I guess I'll just have to wait a few more days until tackling the accumulating varnishing jobs - darn!
