Heading out again
21 May 2015 | Taiohae Bay, Nuku Hiva
Dennis
We got word today that our long stay visas will not be available until next Friday morning. So, we are headed out with Wavelength tomorrow morning (5/22) to sail down to Fatu Hiva, about 120 nautical miles southeast. We have what appears to be (on the gribs, anyway) a perfect weather window to get down there ... light winds from a touch north of east. Light is good, because we will be close reaching, if not beating, the whole way into wind and waves. Three different sources all call it roughly the same, but we still can't bank on that actually coming true.
Given the wind direction and speed, we are looking at the 120 mile trip being 140 to 160 actual miles sailed over 24 - 32 hours. We are reserving the right to bail out at Ua Pou (close by) or Tahuata, next to Hiva Oa (about 80 - 90 miles down), if the weather/timing goes bad.
