Cruising with Castor

Anchored in Cala Tarida

31 July 2012
Sailing without an engine can be bloody boring!  Traveling far out to sea, tacking and traveling all the way back just to bring you a few miles further up the coast becomes a little tedious to say the least.  Watching the bay where you wish to anchor but just can't quite make it without spending 2 to 3 hours tacking backwards and forwards is enought to start you on the road to drink.  The sound of a diesel engine thumping into life can be very reassuring, romantic dreams of helming an old square rigger can dissolve at the turn of a key.

Like most bad experiences we say "never again" but time itself has a way of softening and romanticising experiences and we look back with a sense of pride and achievement.  Given the chance I would have that ignition key at hand every time, but maybe that sense of superiority that comes with knowing you arrived under sail when all the others just motored in, is worth it in the end!
