Bouncing on the Banks
16 April 2015 | Great Bahama Banks
Helen
Left early and motored out the cut between Bonds Cay and Whale Cay. We were met by big waves. Hoisted the main and motor/sailed around the next couple of keys. Down wind sailing with the main and spinnaker. However, the winds were very light and we weren't making enough speed to at least get us to the Banks. The Banks are shallow enough to anchor overnight, but as we got close the wind finally piped up. It's rocky here. Chris and I cooked dinner, so at least all are fed. We will make a decision if the winds fall off, we will stay here. If not, we are planning to haul anchor and head for north Bimini. Mark caught a small fish today. However, after determining it was not big enough, he let it go back in the ocean. He also caught a second one but it fell off just before winding it in. There were a huge amount of very large boats fishing off the bottom of the Berrys today. Not sure if there was a fishing derby, and that is why we put in our lines. It was extremely hot with the winds behind us. We would have liked to sail more.
