The Last Anchorage in Panama
08 January 2018 | Punta Balsa

Just before sunset, we arrived at Isla Ladrones. We motored in between the islands checking the depth. What a beautiful spot. There were caves/tunnels thru several islands showing sunlight at low tide. Our anchor would not hold on the rocky bottom. Motor/sailed slowly to Punta Balsa, avoiding several small fishing boats and the lights at shore. The boats apparently only use red and white lights, in no particular order. The whole time there was lightning and some rain. It was not too cold with the breeze so I stayed in my shorts. Took turns manning the helm. W arrived at the anchorage just after sunrise and dropped our anchor in 20 feet of water. The second attempt held. It was a great place close to shore but out of any of the huge Pacific swells. We noticed at least 3 or 4 houses on shore. There were some mooring balls close to shore and a few small fishing boats. Got some much needed rest after breakfast. I took advantage of the sunny/breezy day to do some more laundry. Everything dried quickly or maybe it was because I got Mark to help squeeze our the water. Was able to connect to wifi with our Tep system. Was able to pay some bills and talk to some relatives. It was a quiet day for sure. After lunch we got into swim suits and scrubbed the hull and props. Mark is researching Costa Rica for potential stops. Enjoying an SG&T at anchor as the sun prepares to set. The people on shore have been playing music all day in honor of us being here, at least that is what we think. This peninsula is half owned by Panama and other half by Costa Rica. Will download and check weather to see if there is favorable winds for the next leg. Our friends on Aloha were leaving for Hawaii this afternoon. Fair winds! Getting ready to cook dinner. In summary, this anchorage has been terrific. We could not have asked for more. The wind is up to 5 knots and changed to the SW. We would love for the SW winds to stay and increase for us to sail tomorrow.
