Squids and Flying Fish
25 February 2018 | Pacific Ocean on route to Hawaii
Helen/Mark
Took turns at the helm thru the night. We had four hour sleep times. However, the waves were large and the boat was moving fast pounding thru them We were off our rhum line or we would not have been able to sail. The moon provided quite a bit of light to light our way. I was sorry to see it set. The only indication of any traffic on the ocean, for me, was a blip on the radar about 20 miles to our port side. Mark said he saw one freighter about 6 miles away and another that was much further out to sea. In the morning Mark noticed a bunch of sea creatures on our boat. There were 8 squids and 3 flying fish. He was good enough to move them overboard. We also found one in the dinghy and another one later on the port aft deck. Some of the waves thru the night were huge and they must have been deposited with them. It was cold overnight. The winds were a steady 20+ and we were making 6-7 knots. Mark reefed the jib so that only 30% was showing our speeds decreased and stopped the pounding and bashing and much easier on the rig. We caught up on our sleep thru the day. I started reading one of my many Kindle books on time travel. It's entertaining but the book has many spelling errors. We had a very late lunch so not sure we will bother with dinner. Mark was good enough to hold my pan while I was cooking or it would have ended up on the floor. Several other things ended up on the floor as they slid off the counter. Our boat is coated with salt water with the spray off the big waves. The waves became bigger thru the day, but more ocean swell like with distance in-between. It's difficult to get a good picture of big waves. We tried. Also took some video as well. Now as it is nearing sunset, the waves seem to be less in height. Every few waves is much bigger. Our speed is now between 5 and 6 knots, depending on the wind. Sent out several satellite messages.
