Half Way & Spinnaker Run!

08 March 2018 | Pacific Ocean on route to Hawaii
Helen/Mark
Our winds died down thru the night, to the point that we had to run one engine for about 4 hours. Then we were able to sail with light winds from the aft. The winds kept changing from port to starboard, so the jib changed accordingly. After Mark's 2nd sleep we decided to fly the Spinnaker. This sail did an amazing job for the rest of the day. By lunch time we had reached the half way point in nautical miles from Mexico to Hilo, Hawaii. It has taken us 12 days to get this far. We are expecting another 12 days unless the winds pick up our speed. The other good thing about today, was that the sun came up and shone for a couple of hours. Then hid behind some clouds. But the entire afternoon saw sunshine. Yeah for our solar panels producing great energy for our batteries. It also was warm enough to take a shower on the port steps at the back of our sailboat. We saw our salon temperature up to 80 degrees today. We watched one more episode of Dead Zone, while snacking on freshly made popcorn! Someone asked if we have enough food and water onboard. We have many boxes of stored food, so we do not plan on going hungry and cannot possibly eat it all before we arrive in Hawaii. Our watermaker converts saltwater to fresh at 8 gallons per hour and runs on 12 volt electricity that we usually get from the solar panels. Ran the water maker for a few hours today and have almost a full tank. We have been downwind sailing all day with speeds from 4-5-6 knots. The sea swells have been 4-6 foot all day but the ride has been smooth. We are just loosing some of our wind and therefore our speed with the spinnaker. Mark is reloading our fuel tank with one of the jerry jugs. He's using his new Auto Zone siphon, although it is taking a long time since the tube is quite thin. Once he is done, we will bring in the Spinnaker for the night. We will revert to the jib sail for the night shifts as it is an easier sail to handle. The sun is still shining and high in the sky so we will be watching for the green flash at tonight's sunset!

We are both computer folks that were live aboard cruisers back in the 90s. We settled in Jacksonville Florida after escaping the great white north and cruising the Bahamas, T&C, DR and points south down to Trinidad. [...]
Extra: Charabia is a French slang word for nonsense or gibberish. It derives from Arabic "sharab" which means alcohol. When you drink (too much) alcohol, you start talking Charabia. The original owners named her and Mark liked the name so it stuck.
