Moved to Anchorage #4! Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018

16 September 2018 | Vava'u anchorage #4
Helen
Enjoyed the movie, Mission to Mars, which we watched after the Tongan Feast. It was still raining off and on, but Anchorage 16 was totally protected from high winds. Mark let me sleep until 8. He got up earlier, but I didn't even hear him. Had breakfast and listened to a shortened (Sunday) version of the Cruisers' Net. Prepped the boat and hauled anchor around 9:15. Started the water maker which ran while we motor/sailed for 3 hours. The winds were blowing up to 25 knots once we were clear of our protective island. Mark set a reefed jib once we were out in the channel. We passed by many islands on route to Anchorage #4. In the pouring rain, we saw other boats changing anchorages. We just wondered why these sailboats didn't hoist any sails at all! We arrived around noon. There were no other boats here. We dropped the anchor in 13 feet of water and it didn't hold. We moved back into deeper water but it took three tries before the anchor held. We had a nice hot lunch. Then decided that with the sun trying to stay out, we should do some snorkeling. As soon as we got in the water the sun disappeared behind the storm clouds. There were plenty of coral formations to view underwater. However, most were what I call 'dead coral'. Lots of fish. Some coral was a live. Not sure what is destroying these coral reefs. We did some hull scrubbing when we got back to the boat. Then a nice hot shower. Again, we were both cold when we dried off. Mark made some coffee with Baileys and that warmed us both up. It's 81 degrees in the salon! When the sun was shining, it actually felt nice and warm. Thankfully, we had a mountain in front of us protecting us from the winds. It's just starting to rain again as I write this blog. I went to check on the towels, hung out on the lifelines, but they are way too wet to bring in. There has been a good breeze, so I thought they would be almost dry. No so. Mark is practicing his ukulele chords. We will head to Neiafu tomorrow morning Then dinghy to one of the cafe's to watch the Singapore Formula 1 race. Tomorrow is a Tongan holiday celebrating the Crown Prince's birthday so there will not be much open. We still have this anchorage to ourselves which is lovely. Keep safe, all of you that are in Florence's path. The posted picture is from today's snorkeling!

About:
We are both computer folks that were live aboard cruisers back in the 90s. We settled in Jacksonville Florida after escaping the great white north and cruising the Bahamas, T&C, DR and points south down to Trinidad. [...]
Extra: Charabia is a French slang word for nonsense or gibberish. It derives from Arabic "sharab" which means alcohol. When you drink (too much) alcohol, you start talking Charabia. The original owners named her and Mark liked the name so it stuck.
